About the Artist

Meriel Hossain is a digital and print artist based in San Jose, California. She is currently pursing a Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in Digital Media Art. Meriel loves to create digital illustrations, collages and videos that encapsulate a discomfort and embrace a rejection of expectation. Their work presents a crossover and clashing of ideas surrounding self discovery, femininity and growing pains.

The Cracks in the Fruit

The Cracks in the Fruit is a collection of pieces that reflect on societal expectations, domestic ideals, and personal perception of your body and identity. These pieces serve as a confession and a confrontation of femininity and how I play a role in this construct. This work expresses how I push back against these ideas, and how I can also fall victim to these roles. Playing with nostalgia, old photographs, imagery of body and fruit, the work creates a beauty that is uncomfortable.
