The Guest

Artist Statement

"The Guest" In my animated 3D short titled "Phrogging," delves into the psychological complexities of fear, particularly the anxieties surrounding the "other" and the unknown, within one's own home. The story unfolds through the eyes of a young girl who perceives a haunting presence in her house as a monstrous threat. This unsettling figure acts as an adversary in a psychological battle, feeding into her mother's growing paranoia, which transforms their once-safe haven into a maze of traps and defenses, ultimately endangering her own daughter. As tensions escalate, the girl's father becomes increasingly desperate, resorting to extreme measures to protect the family, convinced that the mother’s fears are unfounded. The narrative crescendos into an unsettling revelation, leaving the girl in a precarious situation that shatters her sense of security. "Phrogging" illustrates how fear, embodied by the adversary- seen or unseen can warp our understanding of safety, turning familiar spaces into uncanny realms.

In my animated 3D short, I explore the theme of fear particularly the fear of the "other" and the unknown and its unsettling effect on our sense of security. By transforming the home, a place traditionally associated with safety, into a landscape of anxiety and danger, I reveal how our perceptions of refuge can become distorted by internal and external fears. Through blender and mocap I manipulate digital environments to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion, amplifying the psychological tension of encountering the unfamiliar. This work aims to provoke reflection on how our anxieties can erode our sense of safety and reshape our most intimate spaces into sources of unease.
