"Two Sides"
Artist Statement
War will forever be one of the worst experiences anyone can experience in their lives no matter how they are involved in it. However, as a child, my mom did not truly understand the horrors, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and helplessness that came about during the war. All that was going through her mind was "this is a new experience, and I am having fun".

Two Sides is a multidisciplinary digital installation comprised of lights, soundscape, photography, video, and 3D models. It was conceived through conversations with my mother about her experience throughout the Vietnam war until her eventual escape. The aim of this project is to allow the viewer to peer into my mother's inner thoughts during the Vietnam War and see how it contrasts against the horrors that occurred.

The narrative of a story is usually crafted by people in power which can be radically different than how most people see it. By creating this project, I am trying to give my mother the power to tell her narrative of the Vietnam war. Many people within the Vietnamese population have gone through similar experiences as my mother. I hope that these people can see this project and resonate with her story. Those experiences have left numerous traumas that have affected first-generation Asian American households for decades. I hope that we as a community can come together, talk about these experiences, and heal together.
